Blomqvist focused on developing with VW powered Performance

Reigning Formula Renault UK Champion Tom Blomqvist will race for leading Formula 3 team Performance Racing in German F3 and the FIA F3 trophy this season, it was confirmed today (Monday).

Blomqvist, the 17-year-old son of former World Rally champion Stig, displaced Lewis Hamilton as the youngest ever winner of the Formula Renault UK Championship in 2010 and has now set his sights on a second drivers’ title in as many years.

“I am very excited to be racing in German F3 this year,” said Blomqvist. “The key for both myself and my management is for me to develop as much as possible in the coming two-three years, and this year in German F3 is the next step of our long-term plan to do that.

“This season will give me the opportunity to get a massive amount of miles under my belt and I am confident that with Performance Racing we make an excellent team that has what it takes to win the title. I really can’t wait for the season to start…

“The most important part of 2011, though, is to use this season as a fast-learning year to allow me to push my understanding and driving onto the next level and help me get to the top of the sport.”

The Saffron Walden based driver, who also became the youngest ever nominee of the prestigious McLaren Autosport BRDC Award in 2010, will dovetail his German F3 campaign with participation in the newly announced FIA F3 trophy. The six-round championship, which is based on a number of blue-riband events in Europe and Asia, enables the top three drivers to become eligible for the coveted FIA Superlicence required to compete in F1.

Silverstone-based Anglo-Swedish squad Perfomance Racing are one of the most highly respected German F3 teams, with eight podiums and two wins in 2010. They also scored an eye-catching top-ten finish on their F3 Macau GP debut last November.

The nine-weekend ATS German F3 Cup kicks off on 25 April 2010 at the Oschersleben circuit, Germany. Blomqvist, who has been announced in the 2011 MSA Team UK line-up and has graduated to BRDC Superstar status, will immediately focus on an intensive test programme.

As well as several days in the Performance VW Dallara F305-07 car at various European circuits, Tom will work on an off-track programme to ensure he is fully prepared for a title charge.
